A large frozen block of soup is useful for a group dinner and frustrating for one lunch. Choose portions based on the way you actually eat.
Use suitable freezer containers and leave appropriate expansion space for liquids. Label the food and date before the outside becomes frosty. Freeze food while it is still within a safe storage period; freezing does not undo poor handling earlier.
Keep an easy-to-see list of what is inside if items disappear behind each other. When defrosting, follow reliable food-specific guidance and the container manufacturer's instructions. A box that is safe in a freezer is not necessarily safe in a microwave. Planning the route back to the plate is part of making the freezer useful, rather than simply finding somewhere to put more food.
