The pantry · A kitchen note

Keep labels when you decant ingredients

The name is useful; the cooking and allergen information can be essential.

Matching jars create a calm-looking shelf, but they can also remove the information you need. White powders are especially unhelpful once the original bags have disappeared.

Label each container with the ingredient, and retain the packet details somewhere accessible. Include cooking instructions, relevant dates, and allergen information. If you refill a jar, clean and dry it appropriately rather than topping up old contents forever.

Avoid mixing different products simply because they look alike. Two flours or starches may behave differently, and a new formulation may change the ingredient list. When cooking for somebody else, being able to show what went into a dish is more useful than confidently guessing. A tidy pantry should reduce uncertainty, not hide it behind attractive glass.
